💰 Covered California Premium Subsidies and Discounts
How the sliding scale works, who qualifies, and how to keep your discount from slipping at renewal.
ℹ️General information only, not a quote or tax advice. Income brackets and subsidy amounts are set by current federal and state law, which changes year to year — the figures below describe how the sliding scale works structurally, not this year's exact cutoffs. Here's something most people never think about — until the bill shows up. Your plan doesn't just sit there year after year. It auto-renews. And if nobody's actually watching it for you, you can wake up in January paying a lot more for the exact same coverage, or find out you lost a subsidy you didn't even know was at risk.
That's the real job of an agent of record. Not just signing you up once and disappearing — actually watching what's coming down the pike for you. Rate changes. Subsidy recalculations. Plan updates behind the scenes. The quiet stuff that can end up costing a household thousands of dollars a year if nobody catches it in time.
I check in before auto-renewal hits, not after — so you're never the person finding out next year that you could've paid a lot less, if only someone had told you sooner. That's exactly what I'm here for.
💸 How do subsidies actually work, and how much can they save me?Basics
Subsidies act as an immediate monthly discount. Covered California uses a sliding scale based on your household size and Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) — generally, the lower your income, the larger the monthly credit, paid directly to your insurance company to reduce what you owe each month.

💼 How is my income calculated as a self-employed owner, and what if I'm not sure of my exact net profit yet?Income
Subsidies use Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) — for a sole proprietor or business owner, that's generally net business profit (gross revenue minus allowable business expenses and deductions), not gross revenue. If your number is a moving target, you can file an estimate now and update it as your year firms up — that's normal for self-employed applicants.
📅 Do I have to wait until tax time to get my discount, or can I get it applied monthly?Timing
You don't have to wait. You can choose to take the credit immediately each month as a reduced invoice from your carrier, or pay full price monthly and claim the full credit as a lump sum when you file. Most people take the monthly option.
🥈 What's an Enhanced Silver plan, and what's the "benchmark plan" used to calculate my subsidy amount?Silver
Enhanced Silver plans (sometimes labeled Silver 73/87/94) are standard Silver-tier plans with extra Cost-Sharing Reductions layered on for eligible income tiers — same premium as regular Silver, but meaningfully lower deductibles and copays. Your actual subsidy dollar amount is calculated against the Second-Lowest Cost Silver Plan (SLCSP) available in your ZIP code, called the "benchmark plan," compared to your required income contribution percentage.
🏢 Can I still get a subsidy if my spouse or I are offered coverage through an employer?Employer
Generally, no. If you or your spouse have access to employer-sponsored coverage that meets federal affordability standards, you typically aren't eligible for Covered California subsidies, even if you'd prefer the marketplace plan.
🧾 Can I write off my Covered California premiums on my business taxes?Taxes
Often, yes, for the out-of-pocket portion you pay. See the full breakdown on the main Individual and Family guide, and confirm your specific situation with a CPA.
