👪 Individual & Family Health Insurance in California: What You Need to Know
Who these plans are for, when you can enroll, how financial help works, and when a business owner should move to a group plan.
⏰ Open Enrollment is almost here. Why reach out before the rush?Time-Sensitive
Covered California's Open Enrollment window runs November 1 through January 31 each year, with December 31 as the cutoff if you want coverage starting January 1. The moment it opens, call volume and appointment backlogs spike statewide — the people who reach out before the rush are the ones who actually get seen quickly and get their plan locked in without scrambling.
⏳ Already had one of these happen? You may have a 60-day window open right now — don't let it close:
Military service changes, citizenship/status changes, a death in the household, and a few other special situations also qualify — see the full official list linked below if you're not sure yours counts.

📅 See If This Fits You: Grab a Time on Google CalendarWhatever you do — don't do nothing. Pick one of the options above right now. Coverage usually doesn't start until the following month, so every day you wait is a day you're not covered. The clock is ticking — let's get you protected.
🤔 Who are individual and family health plans actually for?Basics
📅 When can I actually enroll, and what qualifies me for a Special Enrollment Period if I missed Open Enrollment?Timing
You can enroll during annual Open Enrollment (November 1 – January 31), or any time of year if you have a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) triggered by a qualifying life event — see the illustrated list above. SEPs generally give you a limited window (commonly 60 days) to enroll, so if one of these has happened to you recently, that clock may already be running.

Yes. California has its own state individual mandate, separate from the federal ACA, and generally assesses a penalty on your state tax return for any month you go without qualifying coverage, unless you meet an exemption.

Yes. Under the ACA, every individual and family plan must accept you regardless of medical history, with no waiting periods and no rate increase based on your health history.

📝 Can I deduct my individual health insurance premiums as a self-employed business owner or sole proprietor?Taxes
Generally, yes. Self-employed individuals — sole proprietors, partners, S-Corp shareholders — can typically deduct premiums paid for themselves, their spouse, and dependents, reported on Schedule 1 of Form 1040 using Form 7206. Your exact eligibility depends on your business structure and net income.
