Mariposa County is named for Mariposa Creek, and mariposa is Spanish for butterfly. Spanish explorers reportedly spotted swarms of them there in 1806. The town of Mariposa is the county seat and the county has no incorporated cities. Yosemite Valley is inside the county, so tourism is the main industry, and the Mariposa County Courthouse is California’s oldest court still in continuous use.
