Trinity County is named for the Trinity River. In 1845 Major Pierson Reading gave it the name, wrongly believing it ran into Trinidad Bay, and Trinity is simply the English version of Trinidad. Weaverville, the county seat, grew out of a Gold Rush camp on Weaver Creek and is home to California’s oldest Taoist temple, now a state historic park. The county has no incorporated cities, about 16,000 residents, and the huge Trinity Alps Wilderness. Tourism, ranching, and vineyards are part of the local economy.
