Modoc County takes its name from the Modoc people, and it became a county in 1874. Alturas, the county seat, is its only incorporated city and was known as Dorrisville until 1876. About 8,700 people live across roughly 4,200 square miles, and timber, farming, and federal land agencies have long been part of the local economy.
