Sierra County is named for the Sierra Nevada and was formed in 1852. It began as gold country: more than 16,000 miners settled along the Yuba River forks between 1848 and 1860, and a 106-pound nugget turned up near Sierra City in 1869. Downieville is the county seat, Loyalton is the only incorporated city, and only about 3,200 people live here, making it one of California’s smallest counties.
