Humboldt County is home to about 136,000 people. Humboldt Bay was named for the German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt, with the name suggested by Stephen W. Shaw in 1850, and the county followed in 1853. Known as “The Home of the Redwoods,” it is a leading timber producer and also has dairy farms and a growing mix of newer ventures; Cal Poly Humboldt is based in nearby Arcata.
