California City was planned from scratch. In 1958 a developer, who was also a sociology professor, bought about 82,000 acres of Mojave Desert and pictured a city of 400,000 people. It incorporated in 1965 and never grew that large, but it is still one of the biggest cities in the state by land area, with a lake in its Central Park.
Today it sits at the northern edge of the Antelope Valley. Edwards Air Force Base, the Mojave Air and Space Port, and the nearby automaker test grounds are part of the regional job base.
