Palmdale began in 1886 as a farming village called Palmenthal, or “Palm Valley,” founded by settlers who mistook the area’s Joshua trees for palms. Dry years pushed the community to move closer to the railroad, and by 1899 it was known as Palmdale. In 1962 it became the first city incorporated in the Antelope Valley.
Today about 169,000 people live here. Aerospace is the city’s signature industry, with USAF Plant 42 and large defense and aerospace employers in town, alongside school districts, retail, and a regional medical center.
