Santa Clarita takes its name from the Santa Clara River, and in Spanish it means “little Saint Clare.” The word “little” set it apart from the older Santa Clara up north. The city incorporated in 1987, and with about 229,000 residents it is the third-largest city in Los Angeles County.
Studios started filming here soon after 1900, and movie ranches followed. Today the area is also known for Six Flags Magic Mountain, which opened in 1971 just outside the city limits, and for College of the Canyons.
