Santa Clara County takes its name from Mission Santa Clara de Asís, established in 1777 and named for Saint Clare of Assisi. Before chips and software, the valley was famous for fruit orchards and was promoted as the “Valley of Heart’s Delight.” Today San Jose is the county seat and largest city, most of Silicon Valley lies within the county, and Stanford University is here too.
