Shasta County is named for Mount Shasta, and the mountain’s name comes from the Shasta people. Redding is both the county seat and its largest city, and about 182,000 people live in the county. Building Shasta Dam helped shape the local economy, and Lake Shasta and the Sundial Bridge at Turtle Bay are well-known local landmarks.
