Tehama County has about 66,000 residents and is named for the town of Tehama, a word commonly traced to a Wintun phrase meaning “high water.” Red Bluff, the county seat, was first called Leodocia, then Covertsburg, before the name settled on the red bluffs along the river. It grew as the head of river navigation, a landing for miners bound for the Trinity gold fields.
