Are Small Business Health Insurance Premiums Tax Deductible?

Posted in ,
Short answerGenerally, yes. Premiums an employer pays for employee health coverage are usually deductible as a business expense. Some small employers may also qualify for a federal tax credit, which lowers the tax owed directly.

Looking only at the monthly premium leaves out a big part of the picture: what the coverage actually costs after taxes.

Employer contributions are generally deductible. When employees pay their share through a cafeteria plan (Section 125), that money can come out before payroll taxes, which can lower taxes for both the employee and the business. On top of that, the Small Business Health Care Tax Credit may help qualifying employers with fewer than 25 full-time equivalents and lower average wages who buy coverage through the small business exchange.

Common follow-up questions

🎯 What’s the difference between a deduction and a credit?

A deduction lowers the income you’re taxed on. A credit lowers the tax bill itself, dollar for dollar. Credits are usually worth more, but they have stricter rules.
