What Is a Guaranteed Issue Hospital and Outpatient Plan?

Posted in ,
Short answerIt’s a supplemental plan that pays fixed cash amounts for hospital stays, doctor office visits and urgent care. “Guaranteed issue” means eligible applicants (generally ages 18 to 64) are approved with no health questions and no medical exam.

Some people put off supplemental coverage because they assume a health history will get them turned down. This plan removes that worry for eligible applicants.

It also pays its full set amount even if another plan already paid part of the bill. That’s called “no coordination of benefits.” With some plans, you can even have the benefit sent straight to an in-network provider to cover the bill at the visit, or keep the cash yourself.

Common follow-up questions

👪 Can my family join?

Usually yes. Plans commonly offer tiers for the primary applicant, primary plus spouse, and full family, with dependents covered to age 26.

📜 Is this my main health insurance?

No. It’s a limited-benefit supplemental policy and doesn’t count as ACA minimum essential coverage. It works best next to a major medical plan.
