How Do Covered California Subsidies Work?

Posted in , ,
Short answerSubsidies act like a monthly discount. Covered California uses a sliding scale based on household size and income. Generally, the lower your income, the bigger the credit, and it’s paid straight to your insurance company so your bill is smaller each month.

Most people never see the math behind their subsidy. Here’s the idea in plain English.

Your credit is measured against a “benchmark” plan, the second-lowest cost Silver plan in your area, and the share of income the law expects you to put toward coverage. You can take the credit every month as a lower bill, or pay full price and claim it when you file taxes. Most people take it monthly. Households in certain income ranges can also get Enhanced Silver plans, which keep the Silver premium but lower deductibles and copays.

Common follow-up questions

🏢 Can I get a subsidy if I’m offered coverage at work?

Usually not. If you or your spouse can get job-based coverage that meets federal affordability rules, you’re generally not eligible for marketplace help.

🧾 Will I have to pay anything back?

If your actual income ends up higher than your estimate, you may repay part of the credit at tax time. Updating your income during the year is how you avoid that surprise.
