Can a Business With One Employee Offer Group Health Insurance in California?

Posted in ,
Short answerYes. In California, a business with just one eligible W-2 employee who is not the owner or the owner’s spouse can usually start a small group health plan. You don’t need 10 or 20 people first.

Most owners I talk with assume there’s a minimum headcount before group coverage is even an option. That belief keeps a lot of small companies from offering benefits they could have had from day one.

The rules in California are friendlier to small employers than most people expect. Once you have one eligible employee on payroll, the door is usually open. Family members can often join too, both the employee’s and yours if you’re on payroll as an officer of your company. Final eligibility depends on the carrier and how your business is set up.

Common follow-up questions

👪 Can my employee’s family be on the plan?

In most cases, yes. A spouse and children can usually be added. That turns a benefit for one hire into coverage for a whole household.

💼 What if I’m self-employed with no employees?

A group plan usually needs at least one eligible employee besides the owner. If that’s you today, individual and family coverage may be the better fit for now, and the first hire changes the picture.
